Gratitude

3/21/25– I am grateful for all the responses I have received to my resume looking for Executive Assistant roles!

I have submitted my resume to a few companies. While I have already been rejected twice, a few still sit in limbo and I had two reach out for more information or to formally submit my application into their system.

No matter what happens, I can say I put my best foot forward. I gave it everything I could. I am waiting on a letter of recommendation and I plan to put in more resumes once I have it to include with my submissions.

No one likes to be rejected, and I definitely fit in this category. The thing is, today’s world takes a lot of weight away from the person and their personality and only on basic information that does not really represent the person and their true abilities. So, it always bothered me to be rejected without someone reaching out to interact with me and see my character. However, one of the things I hated most about business professionals, is their lack of time to actually vet people for roles. They often rely on a third party that doesn’t consider more than a few key words on a resume.

I always felt the character of an individual for the role weighed more heavily. However, I am also a big supporter of giving people a chance to learn the few skills they may not have had an opportunity to learn yet in place of that specific skill. That is why I never understood rejecting someone over something like, “never used QuickBooks.” Well, isn’t that an easy skill to learn? I have seen others maneuver through the program and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist… I understand business finance, studied it, and practiced it in my own business. I assure you, just because I choose Excel for the organization does not mean I do not have an idea of how QuickBooks works. I just don’t use it.

Not all executive assistant roles have the same requirements…

Knowing the business and how to do the basic aspects of the role seems important. Having to teach someone a specific software? That does not seem nearly as make or break to me.

Oh, my favorite complaint is, “I need you to have X amount of years of experience in the role…” I always wondered how they managed to work with college students who know how to do the work but haven’t formally entered the role yet. I’m lucky enough to have some remote experience from before I went to college. Geez.
