Fortune cookie fortunes are a family tradition. — My daughter and I have a tradition where we look for our lucky number on the fortune we receive when eating Chinese. We say if the fortune has our lucky number, then the fortune was meant for us, and it must be true.

Let’s Discuss

When my daughter was little, I told her that a fortune with your lucky number means the fortune was meant for you and it will come true. I made it up on a whim to make opening fortunes a little more exciting. Trust me, it was her favorite part.

Now that she is an adult, I found out that she fully believed me. I had to own up and admit that I made up that lore as a bit of fun for us. The tradition hasn’t stopped; rather, she passed it on to her time eating out with her boyfriend.

Last night the better half and I went out to eat at the local Chinese buffet. These were our fortunes and one had my daughter’s lucky number on it. I took a photo and texted it to her. Our tradition remains alive despite a 2-hour drive between us.
