And then I was cleaning the cat rooms and cages at the local Humane Society…

What job would you do for free?

Now the Discussion

This is something I really did do for free. For over a year, I would go out to the local Humane Society and spend time with their adoptable cats. I would also clean the adult cat room, the kitten cages, and the quarantined cat cages.

During that time, I formed a bond with an elderly cat named Goldie. As you can imagine, she was an orange tiger cat. I was told that no one could actually hold her. Yet, I would go and she would sit with me. We spent a ton of time together.

I ended up in a situation where my Emotional Support Animal (ESA) had to be returned to its original owner. I was a wreck. It was not my choice, it is the original owner who requested his return because he simply wanted him back.

At the time, I had no car. I was riding the bus up to the shelter and discussing the situation with the driver. I was crying and just not well. I told her that I planned to discuss adopting Goldie. I would pay the adoption fee in a week, if they would allow.

We reached the shelter and she asked if I knew where their bathroom was. I told her, and then I went into the cat area. I explained the situation to the worker in the room, and she gave me an application.

I completed it and handed it to the director. I was promptly approved. I was informed the fee had already been paid!

The bus driver donated the fee for me to adopt her. I took Goldie home that day, on Halloween.

I had an amazing year and a half with my lovely Goldie. Unfortunately, she had pancreatic cancer; she was nearly 20 years old at this point, and I couldn’t save her.

Would I change a thing? Well, I would change her sickness. I would never change the experiences I had volunteering at the shelter or my time with her.
