Encounters Over Produce
I use this as an example of my persona when people ask about my social abilities.
I have a face that says “let’s talk,” while my personality is introverted, and I wish to hide.
It is a true reality of who I am. It is also the true reality of how I am to others.
He Asked a Question
It all started with a question about an item next to the tomatoes. I was trying to decide which ones I wanted, and he needed help.
So I helped.
I have a very humble, generous nature. I don’t think twice about this. He had a question with no employee in sight.
This didn’t end with fruit or vegetables, though.
He Told Me His Story
He was lonely. He was what we call a Snow Bird. He splits his time between Michigan and Florida, based on the weather. Think about it this way:
- Florida winters are cold, but nothing like Michigan. Think: Michigan fall.
- Michigan summers are hot, but nothing like Florida. Think: Florida spring.
I do not remember the conversation in full detail. Nonetheless, I vaguely remember a discussion about his family. I do believe he was recently widowed.
He was lonely.
In the produce section, I got to be his friend. I cared and affirmed his need for a little socialization.
We parted ways eventually, but I think back on that moment often.
I Continue to have Random Chats
Over the years, I have had a variety of people make conversation. I have people ask about my crochet work. I like to crochet while waiting inside the doctor’s office.
Not too long ago, a woman was on a waiting bench at the door of a store. She talked to me about life. She was forced to go into a care situation, and she recently moved to Michigan to live with her daughter.
These moments are little gems where I can humble myself and be available for someone in need.
