Making Do: Strategies for Unexpected Business Success

1–2 minutes

When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, I was not quite 19. My birthday was in a month, and I had no idea what I would do.

My mother’s words inspire me to this day:

You can never plan for what will happen; you can only make do with what you have now.

We were not on the best of terms throughout my teen and adult years, before she passed in 2012. However, she was wise.

Many people try to plan for the best timing to have a child. Similarly, entrepreneurs try to plan for the best timing in business.

Today, I took a moment to discuss my stumble into business back in 2006.

See: LinkedIn and X.

I did not intend to start a business; I just wanted income. By then, my daughter was one, so I was up a creek. I had:

  • No car.
  • No babysitter.
  • No local businesses to apply to.

Rather than self-pity, I looked at the bright side. I had:

  • My mom’s computer.
  • Dial-up internet.
  • Determination.

The story is long, and it did lead me to this point. However, that is not where I want to go with today’s discussion.

I simply wish for you to understand the basic concept that my mother taught me.

Make do with what you have now.

If you look at what you have, you can strategize. Don’t walk blindly. Be tenacious. Be determined. Learn your lessons and build success.

Perfection does not make you successful. Your drive, your grit, will help you succeed.

Do you have the grit you need to get started?

To all the mothers out there…

Happy Mother’s Day!
